
Education
in the ACT
The
ACT Education System is structured as follows
Childcare and playgroups.
For children under 4 (Some cost involved)
Preschool.
For children aged 4-5
Primary School.
If your child will be five by April 30 of that year, your child
will start Kindergarten that year. Kindergarten (K) to six. Some
ACT school now have a middle school system and children in Grades
5, 6, 7 and 8 are in a middle school system within a high school
setting, usually on the same property as the primary school.
High School.
Years 7-10
College.
College is for Students in year 11&12. There is usually a
feeder college connected to your local high school.
Independent
& Church Schools:
Canberra has a broad range of independent and church schools.

Concerns
about your grandchild's
development and educational ability
Initially direct your concerns to your GP or your grandchild's
school. Therapy ACT is a multidisciplinary team for the assessment
of children with developmental issues or delays. Therapy ACT can
be accessed through the ACT Health Child Youth and Women's Health
Program. The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAHMS)
offer support for children with mental/psychological health needs

Child
Care and After School Care
Most schools in the ACT offer After School Care; this can be helpful
for a break or essential if you are working. There are many childcare
centres and occasional care centre within the ACT and Region.
Children's Services can let you know of the nearest and most suitable
service available to you and may be able to help you get an emergency
placement if required. Financial Assistance is available through
the Child Care Rebate Scheme administered by Centrelink.
