Financial Issues

Grandchildren cost money to raise:

Centrelink now has brochures and information to help grandparents negotiate their services. The Centrelink website has a special section for grandparents raising grandchildren. Possibly the most helpful way to negotiate Centrelink is via a Centrelink Social Worker. Every Centrelink office has a social worker and all you need to do is ring Centrelink and ask for an appointment. A social worker will work with you over a period of time to establish you and your grandchild entitlements.

Emergencies and set up costs:
Emergencies do happen and there are many agencies that are able to support you. Schools can often help with book packs, uniforms, and excursions. The Salvation Army can help with basic furniture and clothing, St Vincent de Paul can help with food, bills and camps.

Financial Crisis:
If you are heading for financial crisis or are in financial crisis CARE Financial Services, provide free confidential advice, referral, and support. It is better to contact them sooner rather than later if things are not going well.
