What
kind of help do grandchildren raised by their grandparents need?
Your grandchildren will need different help at different times
throughout their lives. They will have immediate needs for warmth
and safety and then ongoing emotional, social, and developmental
needs. This page is intended to help you work out where to go
first according to your grandchild's needs.
Canberra has
a diverse range of public and private support services whilst
not specifically targeted at meeting the needs of grandparents
raising grandchildren they do provide helpful and relevant services.
Many community services provide family support to help families
negotiate processes on an ongoing basis.
It may be
helpful to write a brief summary of your situation, and the needs
of your grandchildren before making contact with support services
to help you to explain your situation clearly and to assist you
to ask the questions you need to ask, and to enable you to get
the information and support you need.
Many services
will ask you for your grandchildren's names, ages and date of
birth and this may be helpful information to have handy.
