What
Happens if Something
Happens to Me or I Get Sick
Accidents
and illnesses are a part of life
Both Grandparents and grandchildren admit that this is one of
their greatest concerns. Many choose to not think about it and
bury their heads in the sand on this issue. It is helpful to have
a plan in place and for everyone to know what it is. This will
help children to feel more settled and reduce their anxiety a
little.
Family and friends
It may be that you have supportive extended family and friends
that you can work out a plan with. Planned sleepovers and holidays
with these people can prepare the way and make an emergency not
seem so scary for the children or you.
Emergency, Respite and
Foster care
In Canberra, there are several agencies that provide respite care
and foster care. Planned respite care can be a great option if
you do not have extended family. This would usually involve the
children going to a family for one weekend every 6 weeks or so.
This builds relationship and gives everyone a much-needed break.
All of these agencies have a 24-hour emergency contact number.
If your grandchild suffers from a long term physical or mental
illness Carers ACT can offer respite care, counselling and support.
